Start With A Baseline?

Making changes in your life is good and is the way we grow and develop as human beings. Change is an ongoing process and is part of being human. When you start to change anything in your life you have to start where you are. Until you know where it can be difficult to make a change successfully. You have to start with the basics.

Starting with the basics is about honestly finding out where you are and what you are doing so that you know exactly what needs to be changed. It may sound strange, but most of us do not know what we are doing. When my clients tell me they want to lose weight the first thing I do is keep a diet journal for a week to get a foundation. The following week they shared how shocked they were when they saw how much they were eating, but also what they were eating. Most of us are autopilots and we do not know what we are doing. If you follow it - and this applies to anything - you have a real picture of where you are and what needs to change.

I read statistics that most people spend about 10% more on what they do. I believe that is true, and it is because what is being used, especially on a credit card, is not tracked. I once had a client who did not have enough time to accomplish everything she needed to do. When he tracked down his time for a whole week he was sadly told that he could spend hours watching television. The first step to change is awareness. You need to know what you are doing and where you are before you move on. Tracking for a week or two will provide you with valuable information that will support your efforts to change.

Before you can start any kind of transition effort you must know where you are. I liken it to those travel maps with an X printed next to “You are here.” Until you know exactly where you are - and most of us have no knowledge - it will not be possible to make the necessary changes.

The first step in your quest for change is to find out where you are. Keep a record for a week or two. This will give you a realistic view of what you are doing. You can track anything from the amount you spend to how many hours of sleep you get. Once you know the truth where you are you can move on.
